Out of Gaza (1)
I did not realize that a piece of paper is all it takes me to get out of Gaza and enjoy a total different world, with no concerns, where you can live normally and take the best of it all. Last week for the first time in ten years I have had the chance to get out of Gaza for one week only, but for me it was a life time that changes my attitude towards things, changes my vision, my judgment to things and even my reactions, I was so relaxed as if I have nothing to complain from, or anything to worry about.
Too many feelings and ideas crossed my mind when I managed to cross Eretz checkpoint, it was a very scary experience that I will never forget, and as it was the first time for me to go through it, I had to ask the officer who was working at the Palestinian point, who comments saying “please be careful any mistake on your way can cost you your life”, a sentence that thrilled and frozen my legs at the same time.
The long road that Palestinians have to walk until they reach the Israeli side was also a scary road, long, destroyed arid one where you can not have any kind of familiarity, or intimacy to alleviate the feelings of loneliness and fear that you have to carry all the way until you finish your security check.
Of course you can not see any single Israeli soldiers during all this way; they are well protected and speak to you from behind many gates and walls which make more difficult to feel relaxed with this idea.
Finally I finished all their security check and was allowed to leave the gate, my gate to a free world, at least from my point of view, I was so excited that until this moment I can not believe that I left Gaza, and that finally I will have the chance to see my colleagues, my supervisors, and communicate with them properly.
The trip from Eretz to Jerusalem took one hour and a half, I was very tired and exhausted from the Israeli check that took all my energy, but I also was very happy to see all the green spaces around me, images that we miss in Gaza. The feelings that I was finally free took away all the other bad feelings, and gave me more energy to continue with passion, I was trying to capture every single image, to record every single feeling, and to go through every different experience, I am not exaggerating to describe getting out of Gaza as a new rebirth was given to me, and I wanted to write every new word in my new book.
The siege, and the kind of life that the people of Gaza have to live left them nothing to enjoy, nothing to taste, and nothing to love, however, for me as a first time to get out of Gaza, I left all these feelings of depression, hopeless right behind me, I cleared my mind, my soul and my heart to enjoy this experience.
I was like a bird that set free out of its cage and back again to sing, a song of his own.
